Director of Department of Immune Mediated Diseases


As a member of the executive management committee of the LIH, the Director is responsible for the overarching research activities and research strategy of the Department of Immune Mediated Diseases (DIMD), and contributing to transversal research initiatives of the LIH.

Key Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Executive committee chaired by the CEO, actively contribute to the daily management of the Institute and assist the CEO in all management missions delegated by the Board of Directors;
  • Define the department research strategy in collaboration with the group leaders, scientists and the general management of LIH in order to guarantee scientific excellence of the research work performed in the department by providing scientific advice and guidance to the Principal Investigators. Participate actively in recruitment and career development of senior researchers and group leaders;
  • Ensure that DIMD actively contributes to the translational research effort and build bridges between scientific developments and treatments in the hospital; and drive patient-oriented research towards precision medicine;
  • Foster collaborations within the Institute, as well at the national and international levels. Increase/maintain international visibility through international engagement. Participate in scientific evaluations of research projects, research groups, scientific advisory committees, etc.;
  • Steer the scientific projects of the department together with the group leaders and the principal investigators in order to maintain competitive position at the international level;
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the department: manage the staff (approx. 100 people) and budget of the DIMD and adapt technological means and other resources to the needs of the research teams. Contribute actively to fundraising and grant applications for the department and LIH. Manage and develop internal and external communication of DIMD in cooperation with the LIH communication team.
  • Develop your own research within the prioritized research areas of the department. 
  • Establish national and international scientific collaboration networks favouring the exchange of competencies and the visits of researchers and students

FNR PEARL opportunity

  • The LIH will support the new Director in the application of a FNR PEARL application. The PEARL programme offers 3-4 M€ funding over a lifespan of five years and supports leading internationally researchers in the implementation of their research programme at the host institution. Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD, MD or MD/PhD or equivalent qualification in the field of basic or translational immunology; with an excellent track record in scientific publications research. Whilst an extensive experience in the field of immune-oncology is of great interest to the institute, LIH is open to other areas of research related to immune-related diseases in which the applicant has shown international leadership;
  • At least 10 years of experience in immunology research or equivalent seniority within the research domains/areas of the department;
  • Extensive leadership skills as demonstrated by the successful management, for several years, of a large team;
  • Politically astute and comfortable with dealing with governmental bodies, universities, hospitals, other academic groups and partners;
  • Significant track-record in securing national and European research projects funding;
  • Appropriate qualifications and experience allowing for the supervision of PhD students;
  • Active participation in international networks in the field of oncology;
  • High international scientific visibility documented by high-level publications, conferences participation, etc.
