Internship Position in Epidemiology (Master students only)

Within the Department of Precision Health, Dr. Sophie Pilleron , PhD, Head of the Ageing, Cancer, and Disparities (ACADI) team and Dr. Berta Portugal, PhD, postdoctoral researcher in the Physical activity, Sport and Health research Unit (PASH), are seeking a Master’s student for a project that aims to investigate whether device-measured movement behaviours reduce the risk of cancer in older adults. 

The student will use data from the UK Biobank, a prospective population-based cohort study. Approximately, 100 000 participants used Axivity AX3 accelerometers on their dominant wrist for 7 consecutive days between 2013 and 2015. The raw accelerometer data has been processed using the GGIR R-package to classify movement behaviours. Cancer diagnosis has been ascertained through a linkage with national cancer registries. 

The student will be responsible for the literature review, data management and quantitative data analysis. The internship is planned for a 6-month period.

Main Activities

  • Conduct a literature review
  • Perform data management 
  • Draw a directed acyclic graph using published literature
  • Analyse data using a causal inference approach
  • Discuss results within the group & other researchers
  • Participate in project meetings & give presentations at the departmental meeting
  • Draft of a scientific paper

Required Profile

  • Master level in epidemiology, statistical or comparable
  • Internship must be a mandatory part of the master degree
  • Experience in working with large datasets would be ideal
  • Good statistical knowledge and, ideally, hands-on experience with statistical programs (R or STATA)
  • Good proficiency in English (written & oral)
  • Good organizational skills
  • High motivation and discipline to work in a multi-disciplinary team
