Post-Doctoral Fellow

LIH is looking for a postdoc in bioinformatics to support Horizon Europe-funded MARKOPOLO (markersofpollution-markopolo.eu) project with analysis of disease mechanisms, data integration, and interpretation. The person will join the Bioinformatics and AI Unit (Department of Medical Informatics) and the Multiomics Data Science Research Group (Department of Cancer Research).

Key Accountabilities

  • Assess feasibility and develop a framework for mapping mechanisms of the impact of traffic noise and ultrafine particulate matter on human health
  • Develop a conceptual model of these mechanisms (a disease map) using systems biology standard languages and integrating the disease map concept from systems biomedicine with the adverse outcome pathway concept from systems toxicology
  • Contribute to the visualization and interpretation of existing and newly generated transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data, and potentially to stratify patients and predict treatment outcome
  • Contribute to identifying molecular markers and biological pathways linked to pollution exposure and disease risk
  • Work together with our bioinformaticians and other postdocs towards developing and maintaining bioinformatics workflows for reproducible large-scale data processing, analysis and interpretation
  • Present research findings through research publications, conference presentations, ensuring FAIR data principles compliance

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field
  • Previous experience of working with developing disease models, especially in connection with the toxicology field
  • Knowledge of systems biology standards such as Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) and Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML)
  • Familiarity with relevant tools such as CellDesigner for building diagrams and MINERVA for making them available online for browsing and exploration
  • Strong track record of scientific publications and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and dissemination of findings
  • Understanding of ethical considerations, data privacy, and compliance in the context of bioinformatics research
