PEARL Chair in Precision Medicine

Co-Affiliation with the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) is a leading precision medicine institute, connecting clinical care and patient-based data to the broader research ecosystem in the heart of Europe. The institute is committed to expanding its AI-driven translational and clinical research and it has formed a partnership and joint research lab for precision medicine with the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Saarbrücken. Through this collaboration, DFKI’s expertise in trusted human-centric AI and synthetic data will merge with LIH’s trove of high-quality, standardized, multidimensional research and healthcare data. Leveraging LIH’s clinical study proficiency, the joint lab will focus on patient-centric solutions that address unmet needs and enhance quality of life, while also pushing the boundaries in federated learning and synthetic data production in AI for health.

With support from the Luxembourg Fonds National de Recherche (FNR), LIH and DFKI are offering an attractive package to lead this research endeavour. The position is backed by an initial €7M in funding over five years, expanding on FNR’s prestigious PEARL program, and has the option for an affiliated professorship.

Both LIH and DFKI pledge their full commitment to ensuring that this new position becomes a cornerstone in the Luxembourg and regional AI ecosystem. We are seeking a researcher who is ready to shape the future of AI in healthcare across the region and Europe.

  • A political environment aligned with the institutional strategies, including a national Luxembourg AI Strategy featuring a healthcare flagship
  • A transnational network of competence that includes multiple Max-Planck and Helmholtz institutes in Saarbrücken
  • The opportunity to impact education and training in AI in both academia and practice, which includes an upcoming graduate school at DFKI Saarbrücken and ongoing doctoral training units with the University of Luxembourg
  • Extensive personnel and research funding (7M€) through institutional funds and FNR PEARL programme funds
  • Access to grant funding from both Luxembourgish and German funding sources

What the role entails

  • Establishing a research program and infrastructure for AI-driven analysis of biomedical data, focusing on precision medicine application in disease prediction, diagnosis and treatment optimisation
  • Promoting and driving cutting-edge clinical research leveraging AI-based digital health technologies, and generating evidence to support their translation into clinical practice
  • Collaborating with clinicians, biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals to integrate AI methodologies into real-world medical practice, particularly in precision diagnostics, digital therapeutics and personalized disease monitoring
  • Advancing the use of synthetic data in precision medicine research and applications through development of AI algorithms, tools and other processes to allow for the enrichment of clinical data sets
  • Providing training and education to multidisciplinary stakeholders on AI methodologies, ethical considerations and their application in clinical and translational research
  • Acting as a strategic partner for industry, regulatory bodies, and healthcare stakeholders in the co-development, validation, and deployment of AI-driven digital health solutions for precision medicine applications (Trusted AI)

Your Profile…

  • A visionary track record in academia or the tech industry, demonstrating the creative prowess and strategic insight needed to shape a groundbreaking multinational initiative in the areas of AI-driven precision health, federated learning, synthetic data and beyond
