how we are helping

At the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), we believe we have a collective obligation towards society to use knowledge and technology arising from outstanding research to have a direct and meaningful impact on people’s health.

That is why we put the patient at the heart of everything we do.

We strongly believe that prevention is better than cure. We therefore want to understand how common disorders and pathologies arise in order to support the adoption of preventive actions before they manifest themselves.

Moreover, we believe that unmet clinical patient needs cannot be addressed through “one-size-fits-all” solutions. They call for novel research tools and methods in order to develop new, personalised diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that are tailored to a patient’s specific and individual variabilities – in other words precision medicine.

We perform patient-centric translational research with a specific focus on cancer and immune-related disorders. Our particular interest lies in the immune system as a shared functional module between health and disease. By advancing the understanding of how diseases originate and evolve from common mechanisms, we ultimately aim to prevent them in the long-term.

With their expertise in biomedical research and population health, and by embracing advanced digital tools, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning approaches, our dedicated teams of multidisciplinary researchers strive to make a direct impact on people’s health. They thus pave the way for the implementation of national and international preventive strategies that improve the health of the population and decrease the burden of disease.

At the heart of our work lies the adoption of a collaborative “bed to bench to bed” approach, which relies on the close collaboration with clinicians and patients, to develop novel therapeutic and diagnostic tools. Using new disruptive technologies on quality-controlled patient-derived data (such as real-life data and patient models) we carry out clinical trials to generate disease relevant knowledge. Through the “bed to bench to bed” approach, this knowledge can be extrapolated to clinical applications, resulting in personalised solutions that can be tangibly applied in the clinical setting to concretely improve patient health.

PRIORITY Disease areas

LIH research expertise spans a wide range of disease areas to provide concrete preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic solutions that are most applicable in the current world, in a bed-to-bench-to-bed approach.

Other Collaborative Disease Areas

LIH research expertise also covers other diseases to provide concrete preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic solutions that are most applicable in the current world, in a bed-to-bench-to-bed approach.
