Here are updates from the ACADI Team for May
Welcome back to the ACADI newsletter! This month we have some exciting updates to share, including some words from our fascinating guest speaker Mar Estupiñán Fernandez De Mesa!
Dr Sophie Pilleron has just published an article entitled: “A comparison of frailty measures in population-based data for patients with colorectal cancer”. Read this interesting work here: https://doi.org/10.1093/ageing/afae105
Dr India Pinker has been accepted to speak at Empowering Cancer Survivors: Innovations and Insights through Digital Solutions – A COST Action Conference on Cancer Survivorship in August in Poland. She will speak about the paucity of online social support for older adults with cancer – based on the findings of a scoping review conducted with our Intern, Fei Liu.
We have been working with a scientific animation company (SciAni) on a campaign to spread awareness about our field of research and our team. Here is a tiny sneak peak for you before we release it…
Dr India Pinker visited the Grade 6 classes of the International School Michel Lucius (ISML) Primary during their STEM weeks to talk about careers in Health Research. Thank you to the school for hosting us, there are some bright future scientists among us!
On the 16th and 17th of May, we hosted guest speaker Mar Estupiñán Fernandez De Mesa. She gave an enlightening talk about intersectionality in breast cancer screening and we are looking forward to our collaborations in the future!
Mar provided this overview of her visit:
In May, I had the privilege to visit the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and meet inspirational colleagues working in diverse areas of population health research. This was an initiative to foster an international collaboration between the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (FHMS, University of Surrey, UK) and LIH, to exchange and disseminate knowledge, and to scope a variety of research proposals. Furthermore, I presented my work on intersectionality and cancer to LIH researchers, and this generated thought-provoking and intellectually challenging discussions about the complexities and opportunities innovative methodologies afford scholars to push boundaries in research, to empower progress, and to move the equity agenda forward. Over the two days visit, we scanned horizons, set a plan for collaboration, and already started working in some projects. A big shout out and appreciation goes to Dr Sophie Pilleron for making this visit and collaboration possible, to Dr India Pinker for our constructive discussions, and the wider team for their warm welcome and eager engagement in the discussion and knowledge exchange.”
