Dedication to scientific research crowned by royal accolade

LIH scientist Wim Ammerlaan honoured with prestigious award

Wim Ammerlaan, Head of Biorefinery at the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg, was honoured with the prestigious “Chevalier de l’Ordre Grand-Ducal de la Couronne de Chêne” on June 21, 2024, recognizing his lifelong dedication to scientific research and his contributions to the Luxembourg Institute of Health.


On June 21, 2024, Stéphanie Obertin, Minister of Research and Higher Education, presented the traditional honorary medals during the national day celebrations. Wim Ammerlaan, Head of Biorefinery at the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL), part of the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), was named Chevalier de l’Ordre Grand–Ducal de la Couronne De Chêne by His Royal Highness the Grand Duke. This prestigious honour recognizes Wim Ammerlaan’s long-standing dedication and contributions to research and higher education in Luxembourg. The award ceremony highlighted the valuable commitment of several collaborators to the advancement of Luxembourg’s scientific community.

Wim Ammerlaan has dedicated nearly 15 years of his professional life to the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL), following a career of more than 15 years at the CRP-Santé, the predecessor of the LIH. Now, as head of Biorefinery at IBBL, he oversees the sample processing, analysis and the development of new technologies for handling biological samples.  Besides his work for the IBBL, Wim has been president of the LIH staff delegation for several years and is a very enthusiastic participant in the Science Promotional events like the Luxembourg Science Festival and Open Door Days.
