Epidemiologist for the National Cancer Registry


In 2013, the LIH has been mandated by the Ministry of Health to set up a nationwide population-based cancer registry. The National Cancer Registry (RNC) is a systematic, continuous, exhaustive and non-redundant collection of data for each new case of cancer (excluded non melanoma skin cancer). The RNC is aimed at providing an objective analysis of cancer evolution in Luxembourg, and enables health care professionals and public authorities to better assess the quality of care provided to patients suffering from cancer. Further goal is to evaluate prevention campaigns and national cancer screening programs. In the medium term, the registry will serve as a tool to evaluate whether the National Cancer Plan is achieving its objectives. One of the purpose of the RNC is to be an infrastructure dedicated to epidemiological and clinical research in oncology.

We are seeking a motivated Epidemiologist who will analyze, interpret, and report cancer data to support cancer surveillance, research, and public health decision-making.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collect, manage, and analyze cancer incidence, prevalence, and mortality data to identify trends and patterns.
  • Conduct studies assessing cancer risk factors, survival rates, and the impact of prevention and screening programs.
  • Provide scientific evidence to guide cancer control strategies, public health policies, and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers to enhance data quality and ensure comprehensive cancer monitoring.
  • Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and adherence to international cancer classification standards (e.g., ICD-O, TNM staging).
  • Write and update the tumor recording manual according to international standards, recommendations, and classifications.
  • Mentor the DMC team (12 members) by organizing and conducting basic and advanced training sessions, as well as one-day workshops ten times a year.
  • Participate in various stages of validation and quality control of the RNC database.
  • Ensure compliance with international rules and recommendations for cancer registries and standard operating procedures related to RNC data management.
  • Propose and develop new operating procedures and technical protocols.
  • Participate in writing statistical analysis plans for research projects.
  • Actively contribute to data analysis and the preparation of statistical reports.
  • Propose and write scientific communications, including abstracts, oral presentations, and articles.
  • Monitor scientific literature on international recommendations concerning cancer registries and epidemiological methodologies.
  • Participate in organizing and facilitating working groups for clinicians, along with the Scientific and Codification Committees of the RNC.
  • Assist in the development of RNC communication tools to enhance outreach and engagement

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Master/PhD in epidemiology, a medical background with specialization in Public Health Medicine would be an asset.
  • Experience in cancer epidemiology and / or in disease registry would be an asset.
  • Good oral and written communication skills,
  • Good organizational and relational skills, autonomy, responsibility, rigor.
  • Respect the professional secrecy and the confidentiality of all the information brought to his/her attention during the performance of his/her duties.
  • Respect the ethical standards and the code of good conduct that are generally accepted in the profession, regardless of whether they are enshrined in a legal text.
  • IT skills: R, Git, Microsoft office.
  • Language skills: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in French and in English; knowledge of Luxembourgish/German would constitute an asset.
