Collaboration with Umeå University Marks New Era in Glioma Research, The Neuro-Immunology Group at the Department of Cancer Research (DoCR) is pleased to announce the six-month sabbatical of Professor Beatrice Melin, fostering a strategic partnership between Umeå University and the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH). This collaboration will leverage both institutions’ expertise to advance pioneering research on glioma development.

As a world-renowned Professor of Oncology and Director of Research Development and Innovation at Umeå University Hospital, Professor Melin is recognized for her groundbreaking work in cancer epidemiology, particularly in studying prediagnostic biomarkers for glioma. Her research will focus on identifying genetic and biological markers that signal glioma development before diagnosis, building on existing epidemiological cohorts. This aligns with LIH’s mission to foster translational and interdisciplinary activities.

During her sabbatical, Professor Melin will collaborate closely with Dr Aurélie Poli in the Neuro-Immunology Group, under the leadership of Dr Alessandro Michelucci, and engage in an interdisciplinary project involving the Department of Cancer Research, the Department of Precision Health (DoPH), and the Department of Infection and Immunity (DII). The project will tap into LIH’s advanced technological resources to innovate in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of gliomas.

This partnership highlights LIH’s commitment to cross-departmental collaboration to tackle critical health challenges. A formal collaboration agreement between Umeå University and LIH is currently being drafted, laying the groundwork for further joint projects, including deeper investigations into Professor Melin’s glioma cohort.

A Global Leader in Cancer Epidemiology

Professor Melin is a distinguished leader in her field, with over 140 publications, 18,379 citations, and a h-index of 63. She has spearheaded major international collaborations, including the Brain Tumor Epidemiology Consortium and the Gliogene Consortium, and held key leadership roles such as Head of the Regional Cancer Center North and National Cancer Coordinator for Sweden. Her sabbatical represents a significant opportunity for LIH to strengthen its position at the forefront of glioma research.

Seminar Announcement: RESCOM Sponsored Lecture Series

To officially welcome Professor Melin, we invite you to attend her seminar, part of the 2024 Lecture Series in Epidemiology & Prevention, organized by Dr Claudine Backes and Dr Aline Mafra Da Costa, and sponsored by the FNR’s RESCOM programme

Title: Understanding Glioma Development: Prediagnostic Biomarker Analyses
Presenter: Professor Beatrice Melin
Date: Thursday, October 24, 2024
Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Room Marie Curie & Louis Pasteur, EDISON Building
Webex Link: Available via link

The seminar will focus on the latest discoveries in glioma research, with an emphasis on the importance of prediagnostic biomarkers for early detection. An “eat and meet” session will follow the seminar to encourage further scientific discussions. Early registration is recommended via epican@lih.lu.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration and future research developments.
