Biobank/Sample collection

The donation of biological samples is voluntary. You may also choose to donate only some of the samples.

Biological sample collection is ensured by the CIEC nurse team for patient at home at time of visit, or by the hospital nurses for hospitalized participants.

Samples are stored at the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg and accessible to researchers willing to perform substudies on these samples. Summary of the sample strategy in the subsample cohort:

Biological samples analysis

A wide range of analyses are performed on the biological samples collected within the study to assess the host-related and virus-related parameters potentially related to the disease severity.

Global aimPathogen-relate parametersHost-related parameters
to assess
• Pathogen-related parameters
• Host-related parameters

and to evaluate whether
• specific biological parameter,
• combinations of specific biological parameters
• combinations of specific biological parameters with clinical characteristics

have a predictive value for the severity of the Covid-19 infection.
Covid-19 mutations
• Sequencing (Swabs – viral RNA)

Co-infection by other respiratory viruses or bacteria
• RT-PCR (Swabs – Nucleic acids)
HLA genotype
• Influence the virus antigen presentation and specificity of the immune responses
• Sequencing (DNA – EDTA blood)

Blood cell counts
• Reflect the main immune cell subpopulations
• Hemocytometry (EDTA blood)

Immune cell phenotyping
• Allow to assess immunosenescent cells quantities and functional subpopulations of NK cells, T cells & dentritic cells
• Flow cytometry (Fresh PBMC)

TCR repertoire
• Assess the diversity and specificity of cellular immune responses
• Sequencing (CPT PBMCs)
