Career orientation and development
The University of Luxembourg (UL) offers specific information for career orientation to their PhD candidates with “Campus Carrières” at UL. In addition, events for career orientation are being organised at LIH and UL.
NextImmune2 together with DII will continue to organize a monthly special lecture series in “Infection & Immunity”, where internationally recognized scientists will present their work. This lecture series format includes workshops that are specifically dedicated to young researchers to allow an informal exchange with the invited speaker about his/her research and career. The external lecture series speakers also provide important contacts for postdoctoral opportunities to PhD students.
The LIH PhD training coordinator informs PhD candidates regularly about job fairs, career development events and job opportunities in industry via e-mail and Intranet postings. LIH organizes a yearly career workshop together with the French-German Association Bernard Grégory (ABG) where topics such as “What’s next after my PhD?”, “Writing efficient applications” or “Preparing for postdoctoral mobility” are addressed. A new PhD association has been created at UL, DSAIL that offers mentorship of new PhD candidates by senior PhD students.
UL offers specific information for career development to their PhD candidates by providing counselling for professional development and career orientation (Career Centre) and hosting the annual career fair Unicareers.lu.
Mobility of PhD candidates
NextImmune2 PhD candidates will benefit from the existing network and collaborations established by NEXTIMMUNE, as well as existing DTUs in order to facilitate mobility.
International mobility and secondments will be encouraged for collaborations on research projects, as well as acquiring of new techniques by the PhD candidates. The previous collaboration with the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in the framework of NEXTIMMUNE will continue to be of high importance to NextImmune2, as this partner provides access to patient samples and data. It will be possible to apply for mobility grants in addition to the training allowance of the FNR. These include the Erasmus+ scheme run by UL or the Fondation du Pélican de Mie et Pierre Hippert-Faber, funding research stays abroad with the aim to benefit from foreign scientific expertise. International collaborations with the University of Singapore and the RIKEN Center in Japan have been established and will allow students to visit our partners there.
Interdisciplinary mobility is highly encouraged for NextImmune2 students. Building on the previous NEXTIMMUNE DTU environment, interdisciplinary projects will be the focus of this DTU. The exchange from wet lab to big data and vice versa will be an integral part of NextImmune2 PhD projects, underlining the holistic approach of the DTU in training the researchers of the future.

NextImmune2 will also offer DTU-specific training measures, such as training groups in specific thematic areas. These DTU-specific scientific courses addressing different topics will be given by DTU supervisors or partners of the program and will ensure high level scientific training of the PhD candidates. The following thematic areas are foreseen: Data management and analysis, Metabolism, Systems Immunology, Modeling and Bioinformatics. Several courses will be organized in the first few months after the start of the DTU, in order to allow the PhD candidates the best possible start. Most important for NextImmune2 is an introduction to bioinformatics and data analysis that will be given within the first 3 months after the start of the PhD to ensure proper training for PhD candidates. This course will be followed by monthly data meetings where problems related to data handling and analysis will be discussed. This setup will ensure a continuous supervised exposure of the PhD candidates to data processing and analysis, which is crucial.
